DAY #6 - Quincy, Illinois to Council Bluff, Iowa
Can I just say....WHAT A FULL DAY we have had. Actually, when we think about it, we somehow seem to pack a whole bunch into each one of our days!!! As we get 'more mature' in our ripe old ages (!), we know we need to do as much as we can because there is yet a whole bunch to see and do. So, onward and upward with our fun travels!
When we left Quincy, IL this morning, we drove about an hour north to Nauvoo. When have been here several times before and were anxious to return. We only had about 2 hours and we made good use of that time.
Here are the graves of Hyrum Smith, Joseph Smith and Emma Smith. These are on the properly of the 'Community of Christ' Church at present. Hopefully some day the LDS Church will be able to acquire them.
The Nauvoo Temple stands very majestically along the Mississippi River. The statues of Joseph and Hyrumn stand proudly in front of the temple with the temple facing the River.
We found a young couple taking fotos. They were kind enough to take our picture for us. We in turn took their foto for them.
As we left Nauvoo after spending a couple of hours, we crossed the River into IOWA. We never could find a state sign to take a foto of. BUT, we did, however, find a sign for the IOWA STATE PENITENTIARY!!! That will have to do for the Iowa State Sign! Go figure...
Literally out in the middle of IOWA and nothing else around, we saw a sign that said 4 miles ahead was a SWEDISH MUSEUM AND GIFT SHOP!!! Say what! Seriously??? Well, our van just pulled off the exit ramp to see what this was all about. What a GREAT find and treasure this was. LOVE the DALA horse outside the museum and gift shop.
In the back of the building this little authentic Swedish house had been built. The red paint was brought over from Sweden! For real! The museum AND this little house were absolutely adorable and so much fun. We spent more time (and money!!) than we should have, but it was hard to get away. So much to see. The more we looked the more we kept finding!!
The museum is located in this little town of 100 people called SWEDESBURG, IOWA!!
We saw so much of this.....corn fields. The entire state is nothing but CORN FIELDS!! Even though it is past the growing season, the fields are still beautiful. The land is mostly flat but some occasional 'hills'.
We stopped in the middle of 'nowhere' to fill up our gas tank. I caught dad just 'chilling' while the pump was doing its thing. What is can you do but be patient and wait!
Well, sure....why not. At this gas station was an A & W Root Beer place. It was mid afternoon and time for our daily meal!
We finally made it to our stopping place for tonight....Council Bluffs, Iowa. We had no idea that our hotel room would be so nice with a gorgeous view of the Missouri River right out our room window (the 5th floor added an even better view). We felt like we were on a cruise ship only our room was not 'rocking'!
And thus....the end of yet another day in the life our this retired couple just doing a little road tripping!
